Monument unveiled in honour of Quebec firefighters who died in the line of duty

Inaugurated on May 25, 2013

The Centre de services financiers des pompiers paid solemn tribute to all Quebec firefighters who fell in the line of duty by unveiling a monument in their memory. This initiative—meant to ensure that those who risked their lives to save others are never forgotten—was part of the celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the Service de sécurité incendie de Montréal.

Gérald Laplante, chair of the Association des pompiers retraités de Montréal, had long envisioned a place of remembrance like this one. To help bring his vision to life, the Centre de services financiers des pompiers put out a call to firefighter associations throughout the province. The caisse is proud to have believed in and championed this worthwhile project. The monument stands as a testament to the collective effort and financial generosity of those who wished to honour the firefighters who gave their lives in service.

The work

The monument was crafted by Montréal sculptor and portraitist Jean-Pierre Busque. It portrays a deeply moving scene in which two firefighters have just lost a colleague in a blaze. Cast in bronze and standing close to 8 feet tall, the sculpture stands before the caisse’s curtain wall, which bears the names and titles of every Quebec firefighter who perished in the line of duty.

Bravery, courage, brotherhood, service, and valour
five words etched at the very core of the project, each capturing a defining aspect of a firefighter’s calling. The profession requires facing real danger in order to protect others. The deep brotherhood that unites firefighters gave the unveiling the feel of something far greater than a ceremony—a moment rooted in shared values.

Among those present were the Minister of Public Security, the families of fallen firefighters, mayors, fire department chiefs from municipalities across Quebec and the presidents of various firefighter union associations, all gathered to honour this meaningful project. Their attendance spoke volumes: the bond that unites firefighters runs deeper than any geographic boundary.
